The King - Michael Jackson

The King - Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson – the King, the Super-Star performer passed away this afternoon, June 25th in Los Angeles!

A 911 call came from Jackson’s Holmby Hills home. But when paramedics arrived,  there was no pulse, and paramedics could never revive the once King Of Pop. Michael had  reportedly suffered cardiac arrest. He was taken by ambulance to UCLA Medical Hospital. But Jackson was already dead.

It’s rumored that Michael Jackson had a rare pulmonary disease. Marie Presley said Michael Jackson had confided to her 14 years ago that he worried about facing the same tragic fate as her father, Elvis Presley, who died of a drug overdose at age 42. Brian Oxman, who is a former Jackson attorney and a family friend, said today he had been very concerned about Micheal’s use of painkillers and that he had warned the singer’s family about drug abuse. Michael was 50 years old, and about to begin his first comeback tour in 15 years. Jackson was preparing for a monster comeback with a series of 50 concerts which was to begin next month in London.

Michael will forever be remembered for his classic moon walk and original dance moves as well as his chart-topping songs.

As a child performer, he toured with his four older brothers, Tito, Jermaine, Jackie and Marlon Jackson in the 1960s. Michael was the youngest member of their group called The Jackson Five.

Producer, Quincy Jones spotted Michael’s talents and cast him in the musical film, “The Wiz” (1978) in the role of the Scarecrow. 4 years later in 1982, Michael Jackson made his indelible mark on the pop scene shooting him to stardom. Quincy Jones once again produced the mega-hit album, “Thriller.” The title track with the unforgettable “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “The Girl is Mine” turned Michael into an International Superstar. The album won 7 Grammy Awards.

In later years, his eccentric personality and image overshadowed his musical talents. He was accused of molesting a 13-year-old-boy in 1993 and settled out of court for $20 million.

But fans could never get enough of him. An estimated 62 million viewers watched his interview on Oprah in 1993. Thereafter, Michael’s life was a series of ups and downs. He married Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’ daughter in ’94. But divorced soon thereafter. His 1995 album “History” and his 2001 album, “Invincible” were not the successes he had hoped for. Michael then married Debbie Rowe, his former nurse. Prince Michael Jackson I was born from this union in 1997. But Jackson and Rowe were divorced 2 years later. Another molestation case surfaced in 2003 but Michael was exonerated of all charges. If convicted, Jackson would have gone to jail for 20 years.

Nevertheless, Michael was an inspiration to up-and-coming young talent like Usher and Justin Timberlake. His upbeat and classic songs are heard around the world in homes and dance clubs. Michael Jackson impersonators are extremely popular the world over. He is survived by his 3 sons: Prince Michael Jackson I, Prince “Blanket” Michael Jackson II and Paris Michael Jackson Katherine Jackson.

Bartender Finds True Love Behind the Bar

June 23rd, 2009 Kiki Kalor Posted in News 1 Comment »

1st Place Winner of the ISVodka Cocktail Contest - Jennifer Ponzini-Ramos

1st Place Winner of the ISVodka Cocktail Contest - Jennifer Ponzini-Ramos

Jennifer Ponzini-Ramos, the 1st Place Winner of the ISVodka Cocktail Contest at the NY Bar Show last week is very passionate about bartending.

Jennifer Ponzini-Ramos has been in the food and beverage industry for 21 years. It’s precocious to say you started mixing drinks when you are 5! But here is how she explains it. She grew up working in her family business, “The Stadium Pharmacy and Liquors,” in Newark, NJ. Naturally, “working with liquor and the public has become a talent of mine.” She also owned and operated a wholesale chocolate popcorn company with her mother, Norma Ponzini. In between popping sales, she was a waitress and bartender at various restaurants.

Bar tending is more than a job for Jennifer, it’s a calling and a passion. “When I am behind the bar, it’s like being on stage, entertaining guests with some witty lines and my ‘concoctology in drinkology’, ” explains Jennifer. Jennifer has tried 3 times to win a cocktail competition. Working her way up, Jennifer won 6th place out of 28 at the last cocktail challenge at the Javits Center. But now, she feels winning the ISVodka Cocktail Contest is a great accomplishment for her.

I asked Jennifer how she made her award-winning cocktail. For her winning drink, the BING-A-LING, Jennifer wanted to do something simple with layers of flavor instead of a “fad” drink.  To differentiate herself, she says, “I wanted to use a fruit that was conducive to have behind the bar, that you don’t see a lot of others using. So Eureka! Bing cherries came to mind. Bing cherries also happen to be in season and they are one of my favorite fruits.”

[Jennifer went on to tell me ISVodka was new for her. She added, “ISVodka is by far the best vodka I have had. ISVodka has a smooth taste, with a little bit of heat at the end. It’s just Yummy!”]

Now that she had the base of her drink, Jennifer wanted to add some mint for a refreshing taste. “But that wasn’t enough,” explains Jennifer. “I needed something to make flavors pop in your mouth, a little acidity. So,  I added fresh lime, then a little simple syrup so as not to make it too sour. ” But being a perfectionist and wanting to make her drink stand out and win a contest, Jennifer decided it was still missing something. “It needed something to put it all together. It was a splash of 7Up that did it!”

Jennifer Ponzini-Ramos Making the Winning Drink, the "Bing-a-Ling"

Jennifer Ponzini-Ramos Making the Winning Drink, the "Bing-a-Ling"

To make the Bing-A-Ling Jennifer muddles the bing cherries and mint. Then adds ice, lime slices (wheels), fresh lime juice, simple syrup. And, of course, ISVodka. Shaking it really well, she then pours it into a tall Collins glass before adding a final splash of 7Up, (or, club soda for the calorie counters). Then you garnish with a Bing cherry, mint leaf and lime wheel.

Interested in creating an experience for her bar guests Jennifer had decided before creating the final contest recipe that it would need to “capture all the tastes that are mapped on the palate.” For 2 weeks, Jennifer tried her concoction on willing taste testers. She has worked at Johnny’s on the Green in Short Hills, NJ for the last 13 years, now she’s currently General Manager there. So finding taste-testers was never a problem.  The name of the drink, the Bing-A-Ling, came to her when she wasn’t even thinking about it. “Like when you try to remember something and you can’t, then at the oddest time it comes to you,” explains Jennifer.

2 of 4 Judges Seriously Judging the #1 Cocktail, the "Bing-a-Ling"

Obviously the 4 judges at the ISVodka Cocktail Competition thought her drink was outstanding. She competed with 23 other contestants who came from as far away as Las Vegas, to try to win a prize. By winning first place, Jennifer took home $2,000 from ISVodka, who sponsored this competition. Plus Jennifer also received an ISVodka silver bucket, an ISVodka shaker and a bottle of ISVodka.

When Jennifer told us what she was going to do with the winning money we decided to share it with you. Jennifer will donate some of it to a ‘childrens foundation for cancer’ and “the rest goes to my most talented nephew. He lost his Dad when he was age 4. And his Mom is not well enough to take care of these things.” So Jennifer and her Mom, Norma, look after him. He’s a talented flutist that studies at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. Jennifer is putting money in trust for him to continue studying the flute.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears open to see what Jennifer is going to do next. Stay tuned for more…
